My mother sits on the couch, her spine rigid and straight. Her gaze flips curiously between me and the pages of the book she pretends to read. Colin sits at the dining table, humming softly to himself and staring off into space.
“Oh, good. Perfectly natural,” I hiss as I open the door.
Alexander Faust is, as usual, breathtaking. In one hand, he holds another bouquet of perfect, blood-red roses that really pop next to his dark pin-striped suit. His grey eyes have such a luminance to them, they almost look metallic, and his skin is porcelain-like in its perfection, which is annoying considering the amount of makeup he has to wear as an actor. If I wore that much makeup on a regular basis, I wouldn’t be able to control the angry pimples that would plague my complexion. I gape at Alexander for a moment, simply taking in his beauty. I want to kiss him, that is, until a fleeting and very poorly timed thought of Chris pops into my head.
“Alexander,” I say. I try to sound seductive and flirty, but I’m much too nervous for seductive and flirty. I think I sound like I’m about to cry. “Come in. Say hello to my friends.”
I think this is a great idea. I’ve called out the awkward-roommate situation instead of trying to hide it. His smile fades as a cloud descends over Alexander’s face. He steps into the room, thrusting the flowers at me as he rudely scowls at Colin and my mother.
“You remember Colin,” I say, gesturing with my arms to my friend as if he’s a game show prize. Colin raises his hand in a friendly gesture. But it isn’t Colin that Alexander is focused on. “Oh, and this is my mo— Edmund Graham, American Bandleader Extraordinaire.” I use my best showman’s voice, but it does no good. Alexander’s eyes are locked on my mother like he’s a hungry predator that’s about to attack. I may as well not even be in the room.
Great. Drama and jealousy, three miles ahead.
“Alexander, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” My mother rises and extends her hand in introduction. “I’ve seen you on the stage, and I must say, you are a remarkable actor. Such poise and grace. It’s like I’m watching a Greek God up there. Adonis. That’s it. That’s what it’s like watching you. Like watching Adonis.”
I purse my lips and frown at my mother. Does she remember she’s a man? People may be free with their words and their bodies in Berlin, but this is just plain awkward. What is with the fake adoration? She’s never seen him on the stage. My God. If the real Edmund Graham ever meets Alexander Faust, he’s in for a very strange encounter.
“Pleasure,” Alexander says, his lips barely moving as he inches closer to me. Despite my mother’s weak attempt at flattery, Alexander seems very uncomfortable. I probably would be, too. My mother is acting very creepy. He turns to me. “We should be going.”
Alexander catches my hand and pulls me out of the door behind him.
